3.7 Communication & Collaboration
Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. (PSC 3.7/ISTE 3g)
Artifact: Grade Level Blog
Reflection:
This artifact that I used for this standard is my grade level blog. I had the privilege of creating a blog to house tons of information and resources that my team members and I would like to share with our parents. The purpose of the blog is to communicate with parents and students in hopes of keeping and keep them updated on current events. The second-grade blog includes information about upcoming learning standards, teacher’s contact information, classroom commitments, resources for home, and upcoming events.
Standard 3.7 states, “Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community.” I utilized digital communication by creating and managing my grade level blog. This blog allows all stakeholders to find prudent information not only about our classroom but events going in the school digitally. The blog is updated every month with standards that will be taught for that particular month, along with activities that parents can do at home to bring the curriculum to life. The blog also includes information to contact each teacher via email, Class Dojo, or Remind. The blog even goes to reiterate our school’s commitments, which is to be respectful, responsible, role models. The grade level blog is easily accessible through my school’s website.
Creating this artifact allowed me to use my technology expertise in digital design to create a warm and engaging place for parents to access easily. Creating this blog also challenged me to really think about what I wanted to share with the public since anyone can access the blog. Creating this blog also forced me to think about ways to protect my colleagues and I privacy to an extinct, due to it being a public platform. If I were to change this artifact, I would create my own individual blog. While I do not mind updating resources for my colleagues, I would like to share what is going on in my individual classroom via pictures and videos, and that is hard to do when you have 80 other parents looking at your blog.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted school improvement in many ways. For one, it lets parents know up to date information on standards that will be covered. The blog also provides videos to explain how to solve a concept or give parents strategies as well. It also gives parents the resources or activities to reinforce what will be taught and ways to contact us if there are any questions or concerns about learning. The blog allows parents to get involved in their child’s learning. Studies have shown that when parents are more involved with their child’s learning, their students seem to perform better. The impact of this artifact can be assessed through routine check-ins and student’s learning.
