The biggest challenge of this coaching experience was getting over my fear of coaching. As I mentioned before, I decided to get a degree in instructional technology to expand my teaching practice; coaching adults was not what I wanted to do at all! However, this coaching experience has helped me grow mentally and professionally. It has helped me to realize that if we stay within our comfort zone, we will never know our potential. I can proudly say that I had the opportunity to coach an amazing colleague. In the process, I not only learned how to collaborate, but I was also able to help a colleague incorporate teaching strategies that ultimately supports a technology-enriched learning environment and prepare 21st-century learners. All things considered, this assignment has helped me to become confident in myself and confident in the idea of coaching others.
This course has taught me so much about the roles of educational leaders and coaches. From viewing ISTE standards, learning about my school’s current strategic plan and improvement plan, to making decisions with all stakeholders. This course has also taught me that my school’s plans do not include technology and how I should communicate the importance of technology and how it can be used to improve academic success to my principal.
This class has also helped me to stay current with trends and issues in the instructional technology world. I was able to use Feedly to learn more about my capstone topic, and other technology that I would like to explore within my classroom. Because of twitter, I am now connected with tons of teachers who are always giving me ideas for teaching and learning, sharing best practices, professional development (that interest me), and connecting with parents. All in all, this course has pushed me to become a school leader who can help assist in developing and implementing technology initiatives within the school improvement plan. Internet Tools for the Classroom is, by far, one of my favorite courses I have taken in this program so far! Not only did I have the opportunity to complete a goal I had in life (blogging), but I learned about Web 2.0 tools and how to utilize them within my classroom. Before this course, I did not know anything about Flipgrid, BYOD, Plickers, Kahoot, add on and Extensions, Internet Safety, Global Collaboration Projects (GCPs), and using Twitter as a form of communication with stakeholders. Through this course, I have learned methods and strategies to integrate into my instruction that will support communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
My two favorite resources that I learned about in this course is Adobe Spark and Screencasts. I enjoyed using Adobe Spark because it gave me another method to present information to my students. I also liked Adobe Spark because it allowed my students to engage in an authentic learning experience as they created stories. Screencasts were interesting to me because it gives teachers several ways to use them such as explaining an assignment to a student who has missed school, explaining how to do a complicated procedure, reviewing materials, hooking students to a lesson. I will be using Screencasts when I began to implement my capstone project to teach them writing skills. All in all, I have thoroughly enjoyed this course because it has given me the tools I need to improve my teaching practice to help support 21st Century learners. Look out for Blog, Teaching Rock Star! Data Analysis for School Leaders taught me several things about leadership and analyzing data. Before this course, I could not tell you much about Microsoft Excel, let alone how to create pie charts, line graphs, and bar graphs to access data, disaggregate data, and explain data. However, I am now equipped with using digital tools and resources to carefully collect and analyze student achievement data, interpret results, communicate findings, and implement appropriate interventions to improve student and school performance.
